Cancer is an umbrella term for a grouping of related diseases. In all types of cancer, some of the body’s cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues. Made up of trillions of cells, cancer can start almost anywhere in the body. Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become compromised, they die, and new cells take their place.
The number one cause of deaths worldwide, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the name for the group of disorders of heart and blood vessels. They include, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, vascular disease, heart failure, heart diseases, and cardiomyopathies.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. For those with Celiac, when the body registers the presence of gluten, it responds with an immune attack at the small intestines.
A type of inflammatory bowel disease, hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer with Crohn’s Disease. There is no cure but there are treatment options. Crohn’s occurs in the intestines but can affect any location in the gastrointestinal tract which runs from the mouth to anus. Symptoms range from mild to severe. With severe symptoms, the sufferer my be unable to participate in normal daily activities during inflammatory flare ups.
A chronic health condition, diabetes affects how the body transfers food into energy. Food is broken down into sugars (glucose) in the digestive process. When blood sugar increase, it signals the body to release insulin. Insulin allows blood sugar into the body’s cells for use as energy. With diabetes, the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it makes properly. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar remains in the bloodstream. Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.
An eating disorder is marked by an unhealthy relationship with food. There are three main conditions: anorexia nervosa, which is marked by extreme weight loss due to excessive dieting and exercise; avoidant / restrictive food intake disorder, a condition in which a person eats very little and avoids certain foods, often because of odor, color or texture; and bulimia nervosa, involving binge eating and purging.
Allergies result from the immune system responding to what it identifies as a foreign substance that is harmless to the majority of people. In the case of food allergies, the body reacts to a specific food that is tolerated by the majority of people.
Gastrointestinal disorder is the umbrella category referring to any condition or disease that occurs within the gastrointestinal tract. The gastrointestinal tract, commonly called the GI tract is a series of hollow organs forming a long continuous passage from our mouth to our anus and comprise the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension refers to a condition in which, the force of a person’s blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels, is consistently too high. The main harm caused by high blood pressure is creating an increased workload of the heart and blood vessels, rendering them less efficient. Over time, the force and abrasion damage the delicate lining of the arteries.
Obesity occurs with an excessive amount of body fat. More than a cosmetic issue, it increases the risk of other diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers. Obesity may stem from heredity or be combined with personal diet and other lifestyle choices. Obesity is diagnosed when body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher. Body mass index is established by dividing weight in pounds by height in inches squared and multiplied by 703.
A respiratory disease, pulmonary disorder is an umbrella term for any type of disease affecting the lungs or other parts of the respiratory system. Pulmonary diseases may be caused by infection, smoking or breathing in secondhand smoke, radon, asbestos, or other forms of air pollution.
Also known as kidney disease, renal disease is a condition in which the kidneys stop working and are not able to remove waste and extra water from the blood or keep body chemicals in balance. Renal failure that happens suddenly and may be treated and cured. Chronic renal failure develops over many years, may be caused by conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, and cannot be cured.
