Since it is gardening season, the back is a commonly injured area. This occurs from bending, stooping and lifting, being in a static position for a long period of time, or due to a single heavy lift. A few key ergonomics tips to help avoid back pain include the following:
- Avoid overreaching while kneeling or in a bent over position
- Lift with your legs, by squatting down to pick up heavy loads
- Avoid twisting at the waist while carrying a load
Summer is also a time to get outside and be active with friends. One popular way is through golf. Golf is a great activity that is fun for all but also presents the possibility of injuries. A common one is golfer's elbow. This is characterized by pain along the inside (medial side) of the elbow due to repetitive stress from finger and forearm gripping. A few tips to prevent this injury include the following:
- Space out your golfing excursions to allow for your muscles to recover
- Maintain your muscular flexibility with light forearm stretches
- Avoid over gripping the club
Treat these areas with mostly rest and protection for the first two to three weeks. Then gradually return to those activities that caused the injury. If the rest and then gradual return does not help, then...
